Lao Design Shines at ASEAN-China Design Convergence 2025
The ASEAN-China Design Convergence 2025, a landmark event celebrating creativity, culture, and innovation, successfully concluded at Sunway College in Malaysia from May 9 to 11. Organized by the Design Asia Collective (DAC) and Asia Design Week, the three-day gathering brought together top design talents and thought leaders from across the region under the theme “Synthesis.”
Laos took a prominent place in this showcase of cutting-edge design, with Mr. Praseuth Banchongphakdee, president of Bluegrass Design Group, representing the nation. His presentation on the Naga motif, a UNESCO-recognized intangible cultural heritage, captivated audiences by highlighting its deep cultural significance and contemporary reinterpretations. Supported by prominent Lao design brands Ban Hook Lao, Khang, Naree, and Chounlamany Atelier, this work demonstrated the enduring power of Lao craftsmanship in modern design, blending tradition with innovation.
The event featured 17 distinguished speakers from across ASEAN and China, including celebrated names like Kit Woo, Dato’ Lewre Lew from Malaysia, and Karson Wong, Wei Xin, and Hu Xiao from China. This diverse lineup reflected the region’s rich artistic talent and the power of cross-cultural collaboration.
In addition to the talks, the event showcased 100 exceptional works selected from over 900 submissions to the Synthesis Design Competition. The competition attracted designers from across ASEAN and China, representing disciplines like product design, fashion, digital art, spatial design, and graphic design, reflecting the diversity and creative energy of the region.
Reflecting on the event’s success, Dr. Lim Teng Ngiom, President of DAC, described the convergence as a “creative disruption summit”, emphasizing its role in pushing the boundaries of innovation. “Our theme, Synthesis, captures the essence of design itself — the creation of something new through the integration of diverse elements,” he noted, highlighting the event’s mission to foster collaboration and cultural exchange.
As the ASEAN-China Design Convergence 2025 concludes, it leaves a lasting impression of the power of design to connect cultures, push creative boundaries, and inspire the next generation of creators.
