In an era where technology is transforming the way people work worldwide, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer solely the domain of programmers or IT experts; it has become an essential “fundamental skill” for all professions. To respond to this shift, the ASEAN Ahead (ASEAN AI for Youth Empowerment and Development) program—a regional initiative supported by the ASEAN Foundation and LinkedIn—was launched in February 2026. The goal is to intellectually equip and provide labor-market-ready AI skills to 18,200 young people across ASEAN, including the Lao PDR.
One of the individuals who saw an opportunity in this change is Mr. Saiyavong PHOMMACHACK, a 34-year-old young man from Dongpaleb Village, Chanthabouly District, Vientiane Capital. As a Project & Programme Development Professional who is currently seeking new challenges for his career, he decided to join this program with the hope of upskilling himself to become an expert capable of effectively integrating innovation into project management.
Motivation and the First Step into the World of AI
For Saiyavong, the decision to join the ASEAN Ahead program was not a coincidence, but rather a result of observing global trends. “My main motivation is the determination to develop new skills to keep up with changes in the world and the workplace,” he shared enthusiastically. “Currently, AI is playing an increasing role in many fields, so I want to understand how to use AI beneficially, responsibly, and appropriately for my career.”
Previously, his perspective on AI might not have differed from the general public, who view it merely as a “time-saving tool.” However, after delving deep into the curriculum, that perspective changed completely. He discovered that AI was not just created to cut down work processes, but it is also a valuable assistant in research, data analysis, document preparation, project planning, and even his own career development.
A Learning Experience That Changed His Mindset
Learning through the ASEAN DIGITAL ACADEMY platform provided Saiyavong with educational freedom. The convenience of self-managing his study time allowed him to gradually understand and review the content as needed. But what made this course special for him was its emphasis on practical application.
“The course did not just focus on getting to know AI, but it also helped illustrate the application of AI within the context of work and career development. It gave me a clearer mindset on how AI can assist in Project and Programme Development,” Saiyavong explained.
Today, he can use AI to help research, structure data, draft documents, prepare reports, and even assist in preparing for job interviews. However, one thing he always emphasizes is being mindful in its usage: “I understand much more that AI should be an ‘assisting tool,’ not a replacement for human thought and decision-making.”
The Unexpected and Boosting Confidence
One of the things that surprised Saiyavong the most during his studies was discovering that AI can drastically improve routine tasks, without necessarily being related to high-tech jobs. He learned the art of the “Prompt”—or asking questions and giving clear commands—which is a crucial key that directly impacts the quality of the resulting output.
Upon completing the training, the most obvious change in Saiyavong was his confidence. He no longer sees AI as complicated or intimidating, but rather views it as a “professional skill” that must be continuously developed alongside his existing Project Management skills.
“Working in Project and Programme Development requires analytical thinking, data management, communication, and decision-making. AI can help complement these skills and make me more prepared for new opportunities in the future,” Saiyavong stated confidently, as someone ready for any opportunity in the modern working world.
