Lao graduate students headed to United States

Four outstanding Lao students will travel to the United States this year to pursue Master’s degrees under the US State Department’s prestigious Fulbright Scholarship Programmme, according to the US Embassy to Laos.
During a recent meeting at the US Embassy in Vientiane, US Ambassador to Laos, Daniel A. Clune, congratulated the group on their achievement and encouraged them to make the most of this opportunity, which will benefit their professional development and deepen the ties between Laos and the United States.
Ambassador Clune also spoke with the departing students about their individual academic plans.
Mr Vilaxay Intaxoum will study mass communication at the University of South Florida, Ms Manithda Sithimolada will study human resources development at Loyola University, Ms Malakhone Sonethavong will pursue women’s studies at Loyola University, and Ms Chindaphone Saignaleuth with study international development at Ohio University.
The scholarship covers full tuition fees, return airfares, and a two-year living allowance.
The Fulbright Programme is the largest and most acclaimed international exchange programme in the world, and is designed to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.
According to the US Embassy, more than 80 Lao professionals have earned Master’s degrees from US universities through the Fulbright Programme. Prominent Lao Fulbright alumni are currently working in key positions in government, the private sector, and non-governmental organisations.
The US Embassy in Vientiane accepts applications for the Fulbright Programme from March to May every year. Interested students can email [email protected] for more information.
